Finasteride Flutamide in Prostate Cancer Treatment :

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancer types in the United States. Diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer is a challenging aspect since initial treatment of locally advanced prostate cancer tends to fail in several patients.

However, numerous methods have been developed in recent years for screening and early diagnosis of prostate cancers, making it possible to develop improved treatment options. Two of those improved compounds that have been approved by FDA for the treatment of prostate cancers are Flutamide and Finasteride.

Flutamide is an oral anti-androgen drug that belongs to the anilide type of anti-cancer compounds and has a structure similar to testosterone. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone are required for the growth of prostate cancer cells. Flutamide competes with these molecules by binding irreversibly with the androgen receptors present on the surface of the malignant cells. Flutamide is marketed under the brand name of Eulexin. It could be used as a combination therapy or could be administered as monotherapy. Some of the side effects due to flutamide treatment include fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, gynecomastia and temporary loss of libido. Sometimes, flutamide also alters the functioning of the liver.

Finasteride is another type of anti-androgen that executes its function by blocking the activity of type-II 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. This drug works by blocking the production of male reproductive hormone. Finasteride is marketed under the brand names of Propecia and Proscar. Finasteride has been approved by FDA primarily for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, Finasteride could also be used for the treatment of prostate cancers and hair loss in case of male pattern baldness.

Another interesting treatment option is a combination therapy using Finasteride and Flutamide, which is proving to be more effective.
