Flomax Prostate Cancer Treatment

Prostate cancer can be described as the uncontrolled cell division occurring in the prostate gland, which is a part of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in Europe and the United States.

There are various treatment options available for curing prostate cancer. These include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, photon therapy, surgery, cryosurgery and hormonal therapy.

One of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of prostrate cancer and benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) is tamsulosin hydrochloride or Flomax. Flomax is the brand name of this drug and has been developed by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Flomax is used in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH. These lower urinary tract symptoms include increase in the prostate gland size, urethral obstruction, weak urinary flow, tendency to urinate urgently and frequently waking up at nights in order to urinate. These symptoms are caused due to excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cells due to abnormal stimulation of alpha-1 adrenoreceptors. These receptors are abundant in prostate gland, prostatic capsule, prostatic urethra and bladder neck. Flomax is used to block the activity of these adrenoreceptors. Obstructing these receptors relaxes the smooth muscles of the prostate surrounding the urethra in males.  This improves the urine flow rate and reduces other related symptoms of BPH.

Even though flomax obstructs adrenoreceptors, it is not recommended for use as an anti-hypertensive drug. Some of the side effects associated with Flomax include dizziness, unusual weakness, drowsiness, sleeping disorder, inability to ejaculate, persistent erection, increased heartbeat and rhinitis. Flomax is available in the form of tablets with doses ranging from 0.4mg to 1.6mg.
