Prostrate Cancer Treatments Casodex

Prostate cancer is one the most common types of cancer prevalent in men in the United States and Europe. Described as an uninhibited growth of cells inside the prostate gland, prostate cancer is treated through different approaches.

One of those is a hormonal therapy using Casodex, an orally-active, non-steroidal, anti-androgenic drug.

Also known as complete or maximal androgen blockade, Casodex was introduced in the year 1995. The chemical active ingredient of Casodex is called Bicalutamide.

Casodex or Bicalutamide has a structure which is very similar to that of male sex hormone called testosterone. Testosterone stimulates the growth of prostate cancer cells by binding to the receptors on their surface. Casodex prevents the binding of testosterone to these receptors, due to which the cancer cells either cease to grow or die.

Casodex should be taken once in a day and is available in the form of oral tablets of 50 mg, 80 mg and 150 mg. This drug is the leading anti-androgen available in Europe, USA and Japan.  Casodex can be used as a monotherapy for the treatment of early prostate cancers or prostate cancers that are locally advanced. The drug could also be given after surgery or radiation therapy so as to prevent resurgence of the cancer cells. Casodex could also be administered as a combination therapy in cases of malignancy. It is usually given in combination with another type of hormonal-therapy drugs called pituitary down regulators such as goserelin, buserelin, triptorelin and leuprorelin.

The possible side effects of Casodex drug include gynaecomastia or breast tenderness, uncontrollable sweating, itching, dryness of the skin, nausea and temporary impotency.
