Future Hope For Baldness
For people who are looking for future hope for baldness, there might be good news around the corner. A new form of treatment for male pattern baldness may come from stem cell research. This research is being carried out by scientists at the Rockefeller University. |
It might be quite possible to reactivate the stem cells that live in your hair follicle to start production again by applying a specially formulated medication. This future hope for baldness could help a lot of people who have lost their hair.
As you age the resting phase of the hair gets longer and longer. However, for those who are predisposed genetically to pattern baldness, the resting phase becomes permanent. According to scientists who are working on this project, stem cells in hair follicles do not divide and therefore they maintain their potency. It was earlier thought that the reduction in stem cell division was a protective measure against wear and tear. However, new data has shown that stem cells do not need as much protection as once thought now that scientists have discovered the protein that is responsible for slowing down stem cell division.
The scientists discovered that the protein called NFATcl slows down stem cell division in mice. But when the mice were administered with cyclosporine, a drug, the hair production increased radically as stem cells increased their protection. The hair growth phase was activated in follicles that were in resting phase when cyclosporine was administered.
During their research, scientists found do not to be dormant too much in order to maintain their multi-potent properties. That fact that stem cells maintain their character without degrading is good news for future hope for baldness.
Scientists now believe that it is possible to develop a local and more specific inhibitor for NFATcl so that the stem cells can be stimulated to promote new hair growth.
