Canker Sores In The Mouth What Is It From

Canker sores are painful and superficial sores (blisters) that occur inside the mouth. Usually these sores are red but sometimes they can have white coating over them. Canker sores in the mouth can occur inside the lip, on the inner areas of your cheek, at the base of your gums or under your tongue.

Anyone can get canker sores in the mouth but it has been seen that women, teenagers and young adults in their 20s are more prone to them. In addition, canker sores run in the family. If you are prone to canker sores, the likelihood of your children getting them is 90 percent. However, canker sores are not at all contagious.

Canker Sores in the Mouth -- What Is It From?
The exact cause of canker sores in the mouth is not known. However, canker sores can be caused due to stress or injury to the inside of the mouth. Even allergy to certain foods, including citrus or acidic foods and vegetables, can cause you to get canker sores. Women have the tendency to get canker sores during or just before their menstrual periods.

However, some people get canker sores because of underlying health problems like impaired immune system; lack of vitamin B12, zinc, folic acid or iron; and gastrointestinal tract diseases like Celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.

People can also get canker sores from sharp tooth surface or using ill-fitting dentures or braces.

Types of Canker Sores:
There are primarily two types of canker sores and they are as follows:

  • Simple Canker Sores: These sores appear three or four times a year and can last up to a week. They are more common in people aged between 10 and 20 years.
  • Complex Canker Sores: These are less common and occur usually in people who have already had them before.
