Contact dermatitis, also known sometimes as topical dermatitis, is a type of skin disease where the skin has irritation after it comes in contact with an irritant. Contact dermatitis can range from mild to severe. It can also be caused by an allergy to a substance or it can be an irritation caused due to a substance.

There are many different types of substances that can cause contact dermatitis including soaps, detergents, cleaning products, jewelry, and makeup among others. Even the rash a person gets after coming in contact with poison ivy is a type of contact dermatitis.

When a person gets topical dermatitis, he will suffer from severe itchiness. Relief from itchiness caused by topical dermatitis basically involved washing the affected area thoroughly with water so that all traces of the irritant are removed. To relieve the itchiness, one should use calamine lotion and cool oatmeal bath. Even an antihistamine like Benadryl is effective in relieving itchiness caused by topical dermatitis, but be careful as Benadryl can cause drowsiness. More...
