Hair Coloring And Eczema
Eczema is a type of skin infection or disease wherein the skin gets severely inflamed and begins to itch. The condition is neither life-threatening nor contagious. However, the itchiness causes extreme discomfort and leads to dry and scaly rash. There are many types of eczema but usually what people call eczema is the most common variety of the condition, correctly known as atopic dermatitis. |
Eczema can affect people of all ages and races. Usually the condition makes it appearance early in life and once you get it, you can be sure that will appear periodically throughout your lifetime. In some cases, eczema improves over time while in others it becomes chronic.
According to allergic clinics in the US, extended and continuous use of hair dye, especially the ones with permanent colors, can cause an allergic reaction in people. This allergic reaction invariably is eczema. People who are prone to eczema sometimes get the condition when they resort to hair coloring. The eczema starts because of a chemical ingredient used in permanent hair colors, which is known as para-phenylenediamine or PPD. This chemical ingredient is found nearly in two-thirds of all commercial hair colors and dyes.
Thus, there seems to be a link between hair coloring and eczema. People who have highly sensitive skin should refrain from using hair dyes as it may lead to eczema of the scalp. If that happens, the person will suffer from a lot of discomfort, itchiness. Because of itchiness, the person ends up scratching the skin which gets a scaly and dry appearance as the skin starts oozing and then crusts over.
