How To Get Rid Of Eczema

Eczema, which is the common name for atopic dermatitis, is a type of skin disorder that is characterized by dryness of the skin along with itching, flaking, redness, blistering, bleeding or oozing. A person can have all the symptoms or just one of them. Symptoms vary from person to person. However, the most common symptoms of eczema are itchiness, redness and bleeding which occurs due to non-stop scratching.

How to Get Rid of Eczema:

Nearly all treatments for eczema involve reducing the inflammation and relieving the itching. The treatments also look to prevent recurrence in the future. Since eczema has so many possible causes, it is quite difficult to have one standard treatment. However, there are different things that you can do to ease the symptoms which help to get rid of eczema, even if it is for a short while.

One of the best ways to get rid of eczema is to avoid using detergents as much as possible. Detergents tend to have adverse effect on the eczema and increase the symptoms of itchiness and inflammation still further. This primarily is due to the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate present in detergents. Sodium lauryl sulfate is known to increase the penetration of antigens into the skin.

Dry skin also worsens eczema and that is why eczema sufferers are always advised to moisturize their skin. It is best to use moisturizing body wash. Water-based creams tend to retain the skin’s natural oils and it has been seen that they help to reduce the need of moisturizing the skin. It is advisable to apply moisturizing creams or lotions immediately after your bath so that the moisture gets locked in.

If your skin is not cracked or bleeding, you can use a waterproof tape to improve the skin integrity and moisture levels. This allows the skin to heal better and puts a stop to the itching and cracking of the skin.

If itching is caused due to allergens, it is best to use antihistamines and anti-inflammatory creams. These creams will stop you from scratching and thus avoiding the risk of skin cracking, bleeding and infection.

Inflammation of the skin can be controlled by corticosteroid creams and lotions but do remember that prolonged use of corticosteroid can have possible side effects like skin thinning. Therefore, it is best to use them sparingly to control the eczema and once you achieve your objective, it is advisable to shift to a water-based moisturizing cream or lotion.
