What Is Dermatology ?

Dermatology is a branch of study that deals with the study of the skin and its related diseases. A dermatologist is the one who specializes in this branch. They may also deal with certain cosmetic operations of skin, scalp, hair, or nail.

In 1801, the first school of dermatology was developed at Paris called Hôpital Saint-Louis. There are different sub-branches in this subject. Some of them are Cosmetic dermatology, Dermatopathology, Immunodermatology, Pediatric Dermatology and Teledermatology.

Cosmetic dermatology is that which deals with performing cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, face lifts, and blepharoplasty. Dermatopathologists deal with the pathology of the skin. Immunodermatologists are the ones who specialize in treating immune mediated skin diseases such as lupus, bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris and other such diseases of the skin. Pediatric Dermatologists deal with complex skin diseases of the skin in infants and neonates, and hereditary skin diseases. Teledermatology is a branch of study where telecommunication is used to communicate over long distances and provide opinion on skin conditions or diseases likewise.

Dermatologists may provide different therapies such as cosmetic filler injections, removing hair with laser, hair transplantation; intralesional treatment which is done using steroids or chemotherapy; laser therapy which helps in managing birth marks, skin diseases like vitiligo, tattoo removal and so on; photodynamic therapy to treat skin cancer; cryosurgery to treat warts and skin cancer; radiation therapy; systemic therapy using antibiotics, immunomodulators and so on; and topical therapies where a dermatologist is best suited to tell you what sort of topical product you should use for your skin type.
