Health Problem With Shingles
Usually there is not health problem with shingles because the blisters heal well. However, sometimes the blisters can get infected with bacteria leading to cellulitis, which is a bacterial infection of the skin. If a person gets cellulitis because of shingles, the affected area becomes red, warm, firm and tender. One will find red streaks around the wound. If you notice this, you should immediately contact your doctor so that he can prescribe antibiotics to treat the condition. |

However, the most worrisome health problem with shingles is when it affects the face, especially the forehead and nose. In cases like this, it is quite possible that a shingles outbreak can affect the optic nerve. If this happens, it can lead to loss of vision.
Sometimes, shingles can also affect the ear. When this happens, the person experiences ear ache, dizziness, deafness and paralysis on one side of the face. This condition is known as Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. Usually the pain tends to go after within 48 hours but there is always a possibility of having permanent nerve damage.
A very rare health problem with shingles is encephalitis. This is the inflammation of the brain and it causes fever, seizures and confusion. Sometimes, people who have severe outbreak of shingles experience the pain for weeks, months or even years.
According to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, if a pregnant woman develops shingles, it does not harm the baby but if the mother develops shingles 21 to 5 days before childbirth, the newborn baby can get chicken pox at birth or within a few days after birth.
