Statistics Of Babies With Shingles
Shingles is a painful rash usually seen in adults but there have been cases of babies with shingles. Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus, which stays dormant in the body even after the actual chicken pox disappears. If the virus gets active, it causes shingles. |
There are hardly any statistics of babies with shingles. Therefore, it has become very hard for scientists to do a comprehensive study on babies with shingles. However, scientists and doctors know for sure that if pregnant women get chicken pox between 21 to 5 days prior to giving birth, the newborn infant can develop chicken pox at birth or develop it within a few days. This means that the infant can also get shingles as the chicken pox virus will stay dormant in the nervous system after the infection subsides.
The chances of babies getting shingles has been reported to be high in those who just get a mild case of chicken pox, that is the babies who get just one to eight blisters during chicken pox infection. Many mothers seem to bring in babies with shingles to hospitals for treatment without knowing that the baby has shingles. They always mistake it for a cold sore and are very surprised to learn that the infant has shingles.
Babies getting shingles is as dangerous as any other disease that plagues them at that age. The chances of babies developing cerebral palsy is a growing concern in the medical community because the shingles virus is known to be a factor in the development of cerebral palsy. In a study conducted in 2006 by BBC News, it was discovered that babies with shingles are more prone to cerebral palsy than other babies.
