Diseases Of The Muscular System
The muscles of our body are vital and extremely important for mobility. It is with the help of these muscles that we sit, walk and run. Even the heart beats with the help of these muscles. When the muscular system is affected with some disease, it can lead to minor as well as major problems. |
Here are some of the diseases of the muscular system:
- Muscular Dystrophy: A group of genetic diseases wherein the fibers of the muscle are damaged. One type of muscular dystrophy called the Duchenne’s muscle dystrophy can also lead to retardation, and young boys are the main victims of this disease. There is no particular treatment for this disease except for physical therapy and/or surgery and special braces.
- Dermatomyositis: This is not a very common disease. This causes muscle weakness along with skin rash. Children in the age group of 5-15, and elderly people in the age group 40-60 are the likely to suffer from this disease. The patient normally would get rash on the face, knees, hands, chest and back, and may also have fever, ulcers, muscle pain and face difficulty in swallowing. The patient is often advised corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs for pain relief.
- Rhabdomyolysis: This is a disease where the fibers of the muscles break down and get diluted in the blood stream. These fibers in turn block the kidney structures, and may result in kidney failure. The main causes of this disease are consuming alcohol, cocaine and heroin overdose, heatstroke and seizures. The main symptoms of this disease are pain and stiffness in the muscles, pain in the joints and weight gain.
