Symptoms Liver Diseases

Every organ in our body has a specific function. If any of these functions are hampered due to any reason, they lead to disorders or diseases. These disorders have specific symptoms, which differ according to the organ affected and the kind of disorder.

The liver is an important organ for sugar-related functions, along with digestion and excretion. The liver produces bile pigments that give stool its dark color. In case of liver disorders, it is this bile production that is affected first.

The most important symptom of any liver disease is jaundice where the color of the skin and whites of the eye turn yellow or even orange. In certain cases of severe jaundice along with flu, it might be a symptom of hepatitis, and needs immediate consultation with a medical practitioner.

The next important symptom is improper digestion and loss of appetite. This will eventually lead to acute weight loss and weakness. Since carbohydrates, fats and proteins are not metabolized properly, the situation can lead to anemia, diarrhea and nausea. Even the cells called hepatocytes may be damaged.

The next symptom of any liver disorder is the discoloration of the stool. As bile production is hampered due to liver disorder, the color of the stool too is changed. Because there is reduction or no bile content in the stool, its color becomes lighter or pale shedding its usual dark color. Sometimes, this can also be due to blockage of the bile duct due to accumulation of stones or inflammation.

In severe cases, the portion of the abdomen below the right-side ribs can see some distention due to ascites or hepatomegaly which can also put pressure on the diaphragm leading to difficulty in breathing. Along with all these symptoms, a person also feels frequent urination and excessive thirst.
