What Diseases Can You Get From Smoking ?

Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart and lung diseases. However, it is known to cause many different types of diseases. It is highly injurious to the overall health of the human body, not only for the person smoking, but even for those in and around the smoker's vicinity. While smoking affects the heart over a period of time, it mainly affects the lungs, and the respiratory system as a whole. It can cause serious damage to the body.

Smoking is so injurious is because it contains nicotine and tar. Nicotine is a stimulant that causes the addiction, while tar is the main culprit behind the damaging effects. Tar slowly starts accumulating in the lungs and the blood vessels, leading to the scarring of the walls or blockage.

Smoking leads to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which is actually a culmination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The accumulation of tar along the lining of the wall of the lungs leads to chronic bronchitis, which causes difficulty breathing, along with mucus formation and chronic coughing. Only way to prevent COPD is to quit smoking.

Carbon monoxide present in cigarette reduces the oxygen content in blood leading to heart problems, while the tar is carcinogenic causing lung cancer. Smoking also is known to cause cancers of the mouth, oesophagus, blood, and kidney.

Smoking also affects the sexual functions as it can lead to impotency and infertility, because smoking can damage the blood vessels that supply blood to the sex organs. It reduces the fertility in both males and females.

Smoking causes a lot of problems in pregnant ladies affecting the womb directly, causing serious complications like miscarriage, bleeding, ectopic pregnancy or detachment of the placenta. The child can also be born with problems like low weight, congenital defects, or improper growth.
