Who Discovered Heart Disease ?

Heart disease is a broad term for a number of different diseases that affect the heart. From 2007, scientific data has shown that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, England, Wales and Canada. It kills one person every 34 seconds in the US.

The heart is the most important organ in the body. It is responsible for ensuring that oxygen rich and nutrient rich blood reaches all corners of the body. When the working of the heart is affected, important organs like the brain and kidney are affected. And, if the heart stops working, it leads to imminent death within a few minutes.

For centuries, scientists and researchers have realized the importance of this organ, and have made an effort to figure out different heart diseases. However, one person cannot get credit for finding out heart disease as there are many types and each type has been discovered by a different person. For instance, Caleb Parry is credited with discovering angina pectoris in 1779. He figured out that this was caused due to obstruction in the coronary artery. In 1910, A. Windaus became the first scientist to inform the world that atheromatous lesions contained 6 times more cholesterol than normal walls of an artery. Anichkov, another scientist, has been credited for discovering cholesterol in 1913. The discovery of cholesterol has been claimed as one of the biggest discoveries in medicine as now doctors and researchers know that it is the main cause for artherosclerosis. However, it was Konrad Bloch who is credited with finding out how cholesterol is made in the body in the 1940s.

Dr Donald S. Frederickson has been credited for discovering HDL, which is also known as good cholesterol. However, it was an American doctor named John William Gofman who has been credited for discovering that cholesterol was the major cause of coronary heart disease.
