What Is The Recovery Rate For Bulimia Nervosa ?

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder where the patient goes into a session of binge eating followed by purging through induced vomiting. Successful treatment of this treatment is possible only by providing both psychological treatment as well as counseling. The rate of recovering from bulimia is very good, but the unfortunate part is that many bulimic people feel ashamed about their problem and do not like to talk about it. This way they deprive themselves of a proper treatment.

It is not possible to treat an eating disorder without the help of a qualified doctor. In some cases, the patient may also need to be given some nutritional counseling. It is believed that 80 percent of the bulimics, who undergo successful treatment, are into remission within 3 months. However, it is common to have a relapse also. There may be about 25 percent people who may still meet the diagnostic criteria for bulimia even after a year of receiving treatment.

The success of a treatment program also depends on the program itself. It has been seen that group therapy works far more easily than individual therapies. This is because in group therapies, people with the same disorder are treated together and each person realizes that he or she is not alone. The patients try to help each other.

It is important to get the right treatment at the right time so that you can save yourself or your loved one from the serious long term complications of bulimia. In case, you are unable to find a therapist, your physician will be in a position to help you find one.
