Foods That Cause Gout Attacks

Once a disease attacks the body, medication is the only answer to obtain immediate relief. Nevertheless, it is always prudent to try and eliminate the probability of persistence of the disease by transforming one’s diet in accordance to requisites of the condition. Gout is a form of arthritis that leads to swelling and pain in the joints of the body such as the big toe, feet, ankles, wrists, fingers and elbows.

The inflammation is a consequence of the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Therefore, people suffering from gout should aim at maintaining the uric acid level in their body. Purine is a chemical found in food, which on metabolism releases uric acid in the body. High consumption of food items rich in purines can be a definite buffer for a gout attack.

Foods rich in purines causing gout include organ meats such as liver, kidney, heart and tongue; fish such as herring, sardines, anchovies, mussels, shrimp and scallops; yeast, gravies; rich and creamy sauces; consommé and meat extracts; vegetables such as mushrooms, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, peas, beans; lentils; sweetbreads; and alcohol mainly beer and wine. Other types of food that contain mediocre content of purines include bacon, turkey, trout, goose, pheasant, veal, mutton, haddock and salmon. Apart from avoiding foods that are recognized as causal agents of gout, it is also beneficial to include those foods in one’s diet that are known to reduce gout attacks and improvise one’s health. Such food items include fruits such as cherries, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, pineapple and bananas; vegetables such as green leafy vegetables, celery, tomatoes, cabbage and parsley; foods rich in vitamin C; diary products with low fat levels; drinks such as fruit juices, coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages; and high intake of water.
