Disease of any kind affecting any part of the body can be disturbing, physically and mentally for the patient. In addition to this, if the disease is accompanied with pain then it certainly adds to the agony. Gout is one such medical condition that not only causes discomfort due to extreme inflammation of joints but at the same time leads to absolutely unbearable pain. In fact, during a gout attack, the patient cries of pain even if a bed sheet is placed on the affected area by mistake.

Of course, one way to handle the disease is intake of prescribed dosage of medicine. However, if one desires to cut down on the financial burden caused by the medications, then it may be wise to give a closer look to one’s diet plan, thereby scrutinizing and eliminating the food items that may be aggravating the condition.

The crux of this medical condition is high level of uric acid in the body, which could either be a consequence of over production of it in the body or under excretion of the same. A specific chemical known as purine is found in many food items. This chemical on undergoing the process of metabolism releases uric acid in the body. Therefore, it is essential to avoid food items rich in purines to restrict the level of uric acid in the body. These foods include offal foods (heart, kidneys, liver, tongue), game meats, red meat, fish roe, mussels, sardines, anchovies, herring, mackerel, scallops and shrimp, mushrooms, peas, spinach, lentils, beans, asparagus, gravy, yeast and sweetbreads. Alcohol and beverages also need to be avoided.

An individual suffering from gout should include in his or her diet plan foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains that are rich in fiber, fruits, and vegetables; and foods low in protein and fat. Some of the recommended food items are fruits such as cherries, strawberries, blueberries, bananas; vegetables such as kale, cabbage, parsley, green-leafy vegetables; foods with high content of Vitamin C such as red cabbage, red bell peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges, and potatoes; celery; tomatoes; carbonated beverages; breads; cereals; pasta; rice; and tofu. Lots of water and maintaining one’s body weight can also aid in reducing gout attacks.
