Causes Of Ovarian Cyst

In olden days, there were many medical terminologies that were completely unheard of. With the advancement in medical science especially in the field of infertility, there are various new medical conditions that have been brought to light by researchers. Prevalence of ovarian cysts is one such condition in the female body.

Let us first understand the anatomy of the female reproductive system. The ovary is the female reproductive organ. Each female has 2 ovaries present in the pelvic region on the either side of the uterus. The main function of the ovaries is production of ova and secretion of female hormones. The secondary functions of ovary include development of feminine body characteristics, like breasts, curves in the body and hair on the body.

An ovarian cyst is a closed, sac-like structure formed in the ovary. This structure is known to contain a liquid, gaseous or semi-solid substance.

One of the basic causes of the formation of a cyst in the ovary is the inability of the follicle to release the ovum. A follicle is that part of the ovary that contains the egg. It grows gradually in size over a normal menstruation cycle and after attaining an appropriate size, bursts open to release the egg. In some females, the follicle tends to grow abnormally and does not ovulate. This condition results in the formation of a follicular cyst, which subsides on its own within a time span of days to weeks. The corpus luteum cyst is formed due to the inability of the corpus luteum to disintegrate and resolve after receiving indications of no pregnancy. In such cases, instead of diminishing, it gets filled up with fluid or blood forming a cyst. Benign cystic teratomas or dermoid cysts are formed by the abnormal development of the ovarian tissues. Benign and malignant ovarian tumors can also show the presence of cysts. Cysts can develop owing to the condition of Endometriosis, wherein the cells instead of growing within the uterus grow outside it.
