An ovarian cyst is technically a sac like structure filled with fluid and surrounded by a thin wall. The size of a cyst could range from a pea to an orange. Surgical removal is recommended in cases of the cyst going beyond five centimeters in diameter. During the younger years, cysts are generally benign and not an issue of worry. However, formation of cysts in menopausal women is unusual and requires immediate medical intervention. The symptoms of ovarian cyst are difficult to identify as they are very similar to those caused by menstruation. Even conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cancer, appendicitis and diverticulitis produce the similar signs. Nevertheless, it is wise to be well aware of the signs of a cystic ovary so that one can procure timely treatment.
Irregular menstrual cycle is one of the symptoms of the problem. Pain in the pelvic region either just before the onset of periods or towards the culmination points towards a cystic ovary. Some females with cysts also experience pain during copulation. Sometimes cysts could lead to continuous or repetitive pain in general that may extend towards the lower back or thighs. Other symptoms of presence of cysts in the ovary include spotting, pain during bowel movements, pressure on the rectum and bladder, heaviness or bloating in the abdomen, tenderness in the breasts, nausea, vomiting, alteration in the frequency of urination, increase in weight, fatigue, infertility, increase in facial hair or hair on the body, headaches and formation of nodules. Apart from these symptoms, a sudden and intense pelvic pain accompanied with fever and vomiting could indicate towards immediate medical supervision.
