Who-Discovered-Stem-Cells      The term stem cell was introduced by Alexander Maksimov, a Russian histologist, in 1908. The name stem cells was given to the newly found haematopoietic stem cells. Thereafter, for around sixty long years nothing much was studied or discovered about stem cells. More..

The Process Of Stem Cells

Stem cells are the basic foundation of a human body. All other cells are formed fully and grow up further because of the presence of stem cells. Once the stem cell matures, it has the capability of growing into 200 different varieties of human cells. The reason that stem cells are important is because they can replicate themselves without being destroyed.

Stem cells are of two varieties -- embryonic stem cells, which are obtained from human embryo, and adult stem cells, which are obtained from an adult human bone marrow, umbilical cord, blood vessels, blood, placenta and adipose tissues.

Stem cells are acquired also via fertilization of a female egg with a sperm, and via cloning which allows the stem cells to generate exact replicas of themselves. These fertilized stem cells are obtained through donation from those married couples who utilize fertility drugs or seek treatment for infertility. The cloning method is used by several researchers for extracting preset number of stem cells from the embryonic cells. These cells are then cultivated in a conducive environment once grown up these are replicated or cloned and are transferred into Petri dishes for further replications.

Researchers are presently finding methods to maneuver dynamic genes within a stem cell to direct them which cell it is supposed to replicate. As of now the scientists have not been able to find any catalytic agent which can help in directing the cell to replicate. The entire process of stem cells helps a scientist understand that how these get transformed into amazing series of cells and produce all tissues, organs and finally a human being.
