Atherosclerosis is a cause which leads to coronary artery disease or CAD, which is one of the most common killer diseases in the United States today. It is believed that more than 500,000 Americans die because of CAD every year.
The function of the coronary artery is to bring oxygen and nutrients through the blood to the heart. When this gets blocked because of the plaques, this amount of oxygen and nutrients do not reach the heart as a result of narrowing of the arteries. Because of this, angina or chest pain may develop, which if not treated in severer cases can lead to myocardial infarction or heart attack.
Removal of plaque from the coronary arteries can be done in many ways. One of the most common methods is that of chelation therapy. Chelation is a process wherein a mineral or metal in the body is removed by attaching a suitable binding substance to it. This method is used not just in this condition, but also in other cases such as in poisoning. Here, the substance that is used to bind to the plaques is EDTA or Ethylene Diamine Tetra-acetic acid. This amino acid is injected intravenously and helps in removing calcium from the affected arteries. According to the American College for Advancement in Medicine, every year about 800,000 patients opt to use chelation as a treatment procedure for CAD.
