What Are The Symptoms Of Acute Coronary Syndrome ?
Acute Coronary Syndrome, or ACS, is a term under which mainly three diseases may be classified. The syndrome itself is a series of signs and symptoms that suggest one of the three disease of unstable angina, and two forms of myocardial infarction. These two types are termed as per the findings on the electrocardiogram as non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction or NSTEMI and ST segment elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI. |
ACS generally happens because of thrombosis or the formation of a blood clot because of which a blood vessel may become abnormally narrow. Nevertheless, it can also happen because of habits which involve excess use of cocaine.
The first and foremost symptom of ACS is chest pain or angina which is an indication of blocked or narrowed veins causing reduced blood flow to the heart. This kind of angina can be differentiated form stable angina which does not fall under ACS as, pain resulting from even minimum exertion. This pain which may start with a tingling sensation may radiate to the shoulders, the arm and even the jaw and abdomen. Along with angina, there may be sweating, dizziness and subsequent light headedness, shortness of breath, a feeling of nausea, being exhausted or succumbing to fatigue very easily. Some patients may also complain of extreme feelings of anxiety, palpitation and so on.
In severe cases, if not diagnosed and treated on time, it may lead to a myocardial infarction or heart attack. Nevertheless, after the cause of the heart attack has been determined and been classified as ACS, the patient should be treated immediately. This is because the patient may be at a risk of suffering a subsequent heart attack.
