Female Hormone And Blood Testing
The most important female hormone is estrogen. This hormone is responsible for controlling secondary sexual characteristics in females. Although it is produced in both men and women, it is present in excess quantities in women. Under the group of estrogens, there are several hormones such as estradiol, estriol and estrone. |
In premenopausal women, estrogen controls the development of the uterine lining during the first part of the menstrural cycle and through this causes changes in the uterus, brain, liver, heart and so on. Estrogen also plays a vital part during pregnancy. During the onset of menopause, fluctuating levels of estrogen cause emotional stress.
In a female hormone blood testing, it is usually done to determine the levels of the three estrogens namely- estrone, estradiol, and estriol. The level of progesterone is also determined. This is because its level changes during the menstrural cycle influencing the fertility and when menopause is over it also affects the estrogens and the effects that they have on the body. Such tests are usually carried out to assess the condition of the person during perimenopause (the menopause transition), polycystic ovary syndrome, dementia, osteoporosis, breast cancer and so on. Blood tests are particularly conducted at the onset of menopause to determine the levels of the estrogens in the blood. The level of testosterone is also judged during such test. Sometimes, such tests are also required when making a decision about hormone replacement therapy. They are also used when treatment has to be decided for cases such as endometriosis, breast cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease.
