Thinking And Hormone Imbalance

Hormones are responsible for controlling vital chemical and physiological processes in the body which ultimately control the proper functioning of the body and behavioral characteristics. Therefore, proper levels of hormones need to be maintained in the body.

The amount of hormones released by the endocrine gland is determined by the body’s need for that hormone at a particular time. It is when the amount of the hormone is more or less than this need, that problems arise. Hormones influence the functioning of specific genes and in turn induce them to produce specific enzymes that are required in various metabolic reactions.

Mineralocorticosteroids and the other hormones secreted by the adrenal glands regulate the plasma sodium potassium concentration and also regulate the carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism. When they are not produced in the right amount, they lead to Addison’s disease. This is when the glucocorticoids and the mineralocortocoids are not produced in sufficient amounts. It leads to fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness, weight loss and even changes in the mood and personality.

The hormones Insulin, Glucagon and Somatostatin, secreted by the pancreas, control the blood sugar level. The disease because of this is diabetes mellitus. This disease leads to polyuria and polydipsia. There are different types of diabetes and the symptoms differ accordingly.

The thyroid produces hormones Thryoxin and Calcitonin. These promote tissue metabolism, growth and differentiation. The disorders related with these hormones are simple goiter and cretinism in children and myxoedema in adults. Growth hormones are secreted by the pituitary, and the disorders related are dwarfism and gigantism.
