Diseases Of The Digestive Systems
Digestion is the process by which complex food particles are broken down into smaller ones and assimilated for the proper functioning of the body. Any disease which affects the digestive tract of the body is called digestive diseases. There may also be small scale disorders which may affect the stomach, small intestine, the large intestine or the colon, the pancreas, the liver. |
One of the digestive diseases is gastroesophagal reflux disease. This happens when gastric content pass on into the esophagus. This may cause heartburn in some individuals. Another disease is cirrhosis which affects the liver. It is caused because of excess alcohol consumption. It may also happen when the liver is infected with the virus causing hepatitis C.
Other kinds of diseases include peptic ulcers, colorectal cancer and gallstones. Peptic ulcers occur when there are lesions in the mucous membrane lining the stomach or the duodenum which is the upper segment of the small intestine. Gastric juice which is a mixture of digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid is produced in the stomach. When the mucosal lining is not able to protect itself from the acidic effects of this juice, then ulcers are produced. The common reason for this may be consumption of excess oily and fried food, a stressful lifestyle as well as due to bacterial infection caused by Helicobacter pylori and also if non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used in excess. In colorectal cancer, there is uncontrolled and rapid growth of cells within the large intestine or in the rectum.
