How The Digestive System Works With Other Parts Of The Body ?

Digestion is one of the most important metabolic processes as the body derives its nutrition and hence energy from this process to keep functioning properly. Through digestion, complex food particles are broken down into smaller ones and then absorbed by the body.

The complex food particles may include carbohydrates, proteins and fats which are insoluble. They are broken down into molecules of glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol. These are then absorbed by the wall of the alimentary canal. For the process of digestion to carry on, several enzymes called digestive enzymes catalyze the physical and chemical processes.

The main part of the body which helps in digestion is the Digestive Tract. This is composed of the mouth and the buccal cavity, the stomach, the intestines and the anus. However, apart from these there are other organs which play an important part in the process of digestion such as the liver, the gallbladder, the nervous system and the circulatory system. The liver for its part produces bile. This bile is stored in the gallbladder and is a digestive juice. It mixes with the fatty substances to dissolve them and make them soluble so that they can be absorbed. After this, the pancreas secretes enzymes which help in the digestion of the fats or the lipids.

There are regulators of the process of digestion produced by the nervous system. They are the extrinsic factors which come from the brain or the spinal cord. They release acetylcholine and adrenaline. Acetylcholine helps in pushing the food down the digestive system and also enhances the production of digestive juices.
