Effects-Of-Tobacco-Smoking-On-The-Central-Nervous-System      Tobacco smoking is very dangerous for health. Not just does it cause lung cancer, but it can also affect the nervous system. The effects of the nervous system are particularly profound when the smoker is young, probably in his or her adolescence. Definition Of Neurology

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with the nervous system and disease related to it. In this branch, there is the study of the treatment and diagnosis of diseases. The corresponding persons are neurologists and the ones who conduct the actual surgery are the neurosurgeons.

The neurologist may also be involved in clinical research. There may be specialized doctors called pediatric neurosurgeons who only deal with diseases related to children and infants.

Neurological disorders affect the central nervous system, or the CNS, which comprises the brain and the spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system or even the autonomic nervous system. Some of the common diseases or syndromes are: headache disorders such as migraine, cluster headache and tension, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, cerebral palsy, brain infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis, infections of the peripheral nervous system, spinal cord disorders such as tumors, infections, trauma, speech and language disorders and so on.

Neurologists generally have to complete 12 years of study, including college education and clinical training. Under this, the neurologist has to obtain a four year undergraduate degree, an additional four year medical degree, followed by a three to four year residency in neurology. During residency, the person learns internal medicine followed by three year neurology training. If the resident is willing, once the residency is complete, he may get one or two fellowships. This may be done in areas such as vascular neurology, interventional neurology, epilepsy, neuromuscular, neurorehabilitation, and behavioral neurology.
