Excessive Yawning And Parasympathetic Nervous System

The parasympathetic nervous system is a part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The autonomic nervous system consists of motor nerves. They carry information from the smooth muscles, the cardiac muscles and glands.

This ANS is generally associated with involuntary movements and is not under our conscious control. They are reflex actions in response to reactions in the body. The parasympathetic nervous system reacts in emergency situations. It decreases the enhanced activities and helps in bringing the body back to a normal state. It may reduce the heart rate and blood pressure, help in digestion, absorption and hence excretion of waste products.

The autonomic nervous system controls reflex actions. One such reflex action is yawning. We generally yawn when we are tired, overworked, and sleepy and so on. Yawning is a reflex action that occurs in response to changes within the body; when there is an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide or if the blood and the lungs have low levels of oxygen.

By yawning, the intake of oxygen increases. It is also believed that yawning occurs to cool the temperature of the brain when one is tired or has not had enough sleep. It also helps in increasing blood pressure and heart beat. It is also said that yawning happens when low levels of glucose are supplied to the blood. This may happen when one is hungry. Also, before and after sleep when we yawn, this is thought to be a means to clear the lymphatic system of the individual.
