How Is The Cental Nervous System Protected?

The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and the spinal cord. It is the main part of the nervous system which helps in coordinating and integrating various body functions. There are no nerves in the CNS. There are nerve fibers running together in the CNS, and this is called a pathway, tract or a commisure. There are groups of cell bodies in the CNS which are called nuclei.

The central nervous system consists mainly of the brain which is present within the cranium of the skull. The other component the spinal cord runs through the vertebral canal of the vertebral column. The brain and the spinal cord are surrounded by three membranes which are together called the meninges. These are protective coverings that run continuously around the brain and the spinal cord. The meninges which are present around the brain are called cranial meninges and those around the spinal cord are called spinal meninges. The meninges have an inner membrane called pia mater, the middle membrane is called arachnoid and the outer meter is the dura mater. There is a space between the pia mater and the arachnoid is called the subarachnoid space. This space is filled with cerebrospinal fluid or CSF. This is secreted by choroids plexuses.

The CSF performs many functions such as: acting like a shock absorber and giving protection, it provides nutrition and also removes metabolic wastes and other toxins. Therefore, apart from the meninges there is the skull protecting the brain and the vertebral column protecting the spinal cord.
