The nervous system is that part of our body which integrates and coordinates activities. It mainly carries out two functions, which are regulating the internal environment of the body through controlling the visceral organs, and responding to the external environment of the body through the sense organs. |
Therefore, the nervous system is that part of the body which helps us survive in the environment around us by reacting to the changes in it accordingly.
The nervous system is divided or separated into three sections. They are the Central Nervous System or the CNS, the Peripheral Nervous System or the PNS and the Autonomic Nervous System or the ANS. The Central Nervous System consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System consists of cranial nerves and spinal nerves, and the Autonomic Nervous System consists of nerve fibers called autonomic effectors.
The brain is encased in the bony cranium. It protects the brain from external injuries. It is wrapped in three membranes called meninges. These meninges are called Outer duramater, middle arachnoid membrane and inner piamater. There also psaces between these meninges. They are the subdural space between the duramater and the arachnoid and the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid and the piamater. These spaces are filled with cerebrospinal fluid. This helps in maintaining a constant pressure in and around the brain and also forms a protective cushion protecting against shocks and mechanical injury.
The spinal cord is located in the neural canal of the vertebral column. It performs sensory and motor functions.
