The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the autonomic nervous system, and it consist of those autonomic nerve fibers which arise form the cells in the grey matter of the spinal cord in the thoracic and the lumbar regions. The sympathetic nervous system is mostly concerned with protective responses when there is an emergency. When there is an emergency, the sympathetic nervous system may cause increased heart beat, constriction of peripheral blood vessels, standing of hair and so on. This is commonly called as fear, fight and flight or the 3Fs. The sympathetic nervous system prepares us for fear, fight and flight.
Both the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system work in coordination with each other. They are both part of the autonomic nervous system. When there is a problem in this system it can lead to serious complications such as trouble in the heart, problems related to blood pressure, there may be difficulty in breathing and swallowing food. These problems can happen because of different diseases related to the nervous system.
Parkinson’s disease is one such degenerative disease which happens when certain chemicals in the brain which are responsible for coordinating movements die. Problems can also happen because of alcoholism which leads to loss of coordination. Diabetes can also be a causal factor for such problems to occur. Some of these problems may be there only for a short time and others can be life threatening when they affect the heart or your breathing.
