What Diseases Are Found In The Nervous System ?

Nervous system diseases are very critical and dangerous because they affect the entire body and our control, coordination and thinking. They may also be complicated in nature which makes their diagnosis equally difficult.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder where there are short, periodic attacks of motor, sensory or psychological malfunction. There may be changes in behavior over a period of time which may vary according to the area of the brain that has been affected. These are called seizures and may be of different types such as partial seizures and generalized seizures. During such seizures what happens is the discharge of irregular and abnormal discharge of electricity from millions of neurons in the brain. The reason for epilepsy may be a head injury, brain tumors, infections acquired as a child such as measles mumps, whooping cough or even metabolic and chemical changes occurring over a period of time.

Parkinson’s disease is another well known neurological disorder. It is a degenerative disease which takes its course over a period of time. It happens because of the death of those cells in the brain which produce the chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for coordination activities. The symptoms in this disease are – tremor of the arms, jaws, legs and the face. There may be loss of postural reflexes, impaired walking, low rate of muscle contraction and movement and so on. It is said that each year around 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It usually affects middle age men and women, and it is progressive in nature. Despite its prevalence, doctors are not sure of what the exact reasons for the disease are.
