What Medicine To Take To Withdraw From Ultram ?

Ultram is an analgesic drug used as a pain reliever. Introduced in the year 1995, Ultram is the brand name of a generic drug called Tramadol. Ultram prevents or decreases pain by binding to specific opioid pain receptors found in the brain spinal cord and gastrointestinal tract. Ultram blocks the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in the body, thereby altering the pain message to the brain. Ultram is neither a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug nor a narcotic compound.

Ultram should never be taken more than the prescribed dosage. But, many times patients do experience certain withdrawal symptoms while reducing the usage of Ultram. Ultram withdrawal symptoms include sleeping disorders, dizziness, hallucinations, irritated behavior, sweating, chills, tremors, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, diarrhea, fatigue, body aches and breathing problems.

A long-term usage of Ultram causes fundamental changes in the brain, thereby making the patient addicted to this particular drug. However, various drug rehabilitation and treatment options are available for patients who are addicted to Ultram. Drug rehabilitation program involves a complete detoxification program through usage of drugs, and is followed by behavioral therapies.

Drug detoxification is an expensive procedure and is often painful. Detoxification is done through administration of other drugs such as methadone, Valium, Clonidine, naltrexone and levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol (LAAM). The effect of Ultram and the urge to take the drug are gradually reduced over a period of 5 days. At the end of the treatment, chemotherapy using naltrexone is given for a period of 12 months. Naltrexone is a perfect narcotic antagonist that blocks the opiate receptors from getting activated. This provides an opportunity to the brain to recover from the damages caused by Ultram.
